New research shows that a serious blood clot condition is far more prevalent than what was once thought. Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) has been the subject of new research by the American Academy of Neurology.
This research shows that rates of cerebral venous thrombosis were most likely under reported in the past. Even with this in mind, it is very likely that the instances of this have been on the rise in recent times. The research team, which was based out of the SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY, found that the prevalence rates of this disease are most likely about three times higher than what has been observed in the past. Even more alarmingly, this rate is going up. Not all of the factors that can contribute to CVT are known, but medications and ethnicity have been indicated to increase the risk of having it. For example, Black people are more likely to have CVT than people of other racial backgrounds. Just why this is is not fully understood yet.
It’s important to note that not all cases of CVT lead to stroke. However, if someone does have CVT, their risk of developing a stroke later on in life does go up significantly. Like so many other health conditions, this information can be helpful for the prevention of future issues. Although CVT cases only account for less than 1 percent of observed stroke hospitalizations, it can still be quite serious. Knowing this, and taking steps early on to help is important, especially as people get older and health issues become more severe.
This is a condition that is most widely found in younger females because the use of birth control can exacerbate the risk of developing this issue. However, although younger females are the most likely to suffer from this, the serious health issues that can arise because of it do not usually manifest themselves until the individual is older. As previously stated, not all people that have CVT have serious health issues, like stroke. However, as the individual becomes older, the odds of health issues occurring as a result of CVT go up. If someone does not know that they suffer from this, it can compound with other health issues and lead to something more serious.
Having a good handle on what can be done to prevent health issues is important. If you haven’t done so already, speaking with a doctor about what you might be facing is vital to continued health as you grow older. This way, you can take healthy steps now and avoid complications later on. While there are some really good senior care options out there–like what we offer here at Paradise In-Home Care–it is always best to avoid the need for help completely. It is more cost effective and leads to a lot less discomfort and pain. Senior care for an elderly person in need is great, but better overall health is always the preferred outcome.
Either way, if you have questions about care, let us know. One of our trained caregivers would love to help answer your questions and get your family pointed in the right direction for a better quality of life.
