New Year’s Eve. It’s the last day of one year and our last chance to think about the year yet to come before it becomes a reality. For a lot of people, this is the time where we start thinking about New Year’s Resolutions and planning ahead so that the coming year can be an even more successful one than the one that has just come to an end.
Seniors are no different. It’s not uncommon for elderly folk to have a new years resolution. But unlike younger folk, it can be a bit more difficult to attain those goals. Additionally, the nature of the goals is likely to be a lot different. A young professional might have a sales goal or a lifestyle habit that they believe will help to advance their career. A younger person might want to focus on building a family or settling down in a house of their own. But seniors are at a different stage in life and their goals are going to reflect that.
Regardless of what your goals might be, there are some easy things that you can do to help make them a bit more attainable. For starters, keep them realistic. I’m not likely to become an astronaut anytime soon. A senior isn’t likely to become an olympic athlete. That’s just not where we are in life. Keeping things realistic makes them easier to attain and keeps us engaged with pursuing them.
Keep the goals measurable. Saying something like, “I’m going to lose weight this year” is great, but how much is enough? Is losing one pound the goal? Or is it twenty pounds? Putting a measurable qualifier on your goal helps to keep it in focus.
Finally, it’s helpful to break the goal into smaller, easier to manage chunks. Instead of saying “I’m going to lose thirty-six pounds this year,” you can say, “I’m going to lose three pounds each month.” It makes less overwhelming and more manageable.
Some people use the acronym SMART to help them set goals. This stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely. Keeping these things in mind, regardless of age, will help the goal to be more easily achieved.
