A new study led by the University College of London indicates that robotic surgery can help improve patient recovery and is relatively safer than traditional surgical methods. The team recently published their findings in the medical journal, JAMA.
Robotic surgery is not new. It’s been around for years and it’s been used successfully for years. However, as technology advances, the advantages of robotic surgery continue to improve. It eliminates human error and helps minimize the amount of healing that needs to occur by reducing the size of incisions.
Recent research indicates that utilizing robotic surgery when it comes to the removal of bladder cancer saw faster recovery times than traditional methods. On average, those who went through the robotic surgery spent 20 percent less time in the hospital than those who had traditional surgery. Additionally, those that went through with the robotic process were 52 percent less likely to be readmitted into the hospital with complications or additional work related to the procedure. But perhaps the most impressive thing about the robotic surgery was that patients were 77 percent less likely to suffer from blood clots after the procedure.
The research team also focused on other aspects of life, such as ability to exercise. Patients who had robotic surgery were generally able to get back to exercise more quickly after the surgery took place.
Although the robotic surgery comes with some big benefits, these kinds of decisions still need to be made on a case by case basis. This is a conversation that you would need to have with your physician to go over benefits and drawbacks to any kind of procedure. They will be able to give you a more accurate and personalized approach to care than any article or study can give you.
Recovery isn’t just a necessity for seniors that have gone through surgery. Extra help after a hospital visit, an injury, or even just through the normal ups and downs of life can be incredibly helpful. When a loved one needs a little bit of extra help around the house, senior care can be helpful, but it doesn’t necessarily need to be long term care that will allow seniors to thrive. Short term care and respite help can also be incredibly beneficial to the elderly.
Senior care is a bigger thing than a lot of people think, especially if they are just starting. And this can make navigating the different systems that are in place pretty confusing. It can be hard for someone new to care to not just find what they’re looking for, but also to even know where to start.
Luckily, there are a lot of resources out there to help you. We can be one of them. If you’d like to learn more about how senior care might help a loved one that is recovering from surgery–or is in need of assistance for any other reason–we’d love to talk more. Give us a call to set up your free consultation session today to get the conversation started.
