During this pandemic isolation and loneliness have grown into serious problems for some people. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the senior citizen population. The elderly are at constant risk of being isolated and it has had a big impact on mental health.
Some have said that one way to combat this is through an increased medical professional presence in the lives of the elderly. More testing is an easy and safe way to accomplish this.
Isolation is a very serious problem for the elderly, and it has been for quite some time–even before anyone was aware of what the coronavirus was. Isolation isn’t always bad over the short term, but when it comes to the long term health of the elderly, isolation has a high correlation with poor mental and physical health. When seniors are alone for long periods of time, they tend to really struggle.
And this makes sense. People are not meant to be alone for long. We are social and live our best lives when this is accounted for. Some people require more social interaction than others, but no one can do well on their own for long.
Seniors are at a disadvantage because they tend to not be as mobile as younger folk. They tend to have more difficulty leaving the house because of physical disabilities or discomfort. And the sad truth is, as people get older, there’s a stronger chance that the people they were once close to have passed away. Older folk have a lot of things working against them.
Even more so now. COVID-19 has made social interaction much tougher than ever before. We need to pay special attention to our elderly loved ones to ensure that they are able to socialize, and that they can do so in a safe manner.
If COVID-19 or any other type of medical testing can help make this happen, then it is a blessing in disguise. With so many seniors basically locked down in senior care centers across the country, increased testing might be exactly what’s needed to help the elderly get the social exchanges that they need to improve mental health. It’s not a perfect solution, but it’s one that has some promise to work.
