One of the hallmark symptoms of many diseases is that there is an accumulation of protein cells within the brain. This happens with Alzheimer’s disease and a few others. Researchers have learned quite a bit about how these diseases progress, but they are still a long way away from understanding how to effectively treat these diseases.
Recently, researchers were able to accurately map the crystal structure of a protein called mitoNEET and were able to see exactly how medications latch onto this protein, creating hope that new and more effective medications can be created to help treat diseases that impact seniors, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s, and others. As of right now, there are many diseases that do not have a cure, such as the two listed here. Doctors can take steps in many cases to slow down the spread of these diseases, but eventually this stops working. They are fatal diseases and have a negative impact on the quality of life for the person who is suffering from them.
This research was conducted at West Virginia University. Their findings were published in the medical journal Communications Chemistry.
Senior care can help to make life better for people with these diseases, too. It will likely be many years before any sort of effective medication is derived, even with this big leap forward when it comes to understanding how these diseases work. It’s not a cure for these diseases by any means, but it is a step in the right direction when it comes to making their lives better. Suffering from a disease that impacts cognitive or physical functioning is scary and it can make life tough. Having a professional caregiver on your side to help make things easier is something that can go a long way toward improving mental health.
It might seem like a little thing, but for the person that is dealing with the immediate repercussions of a change in their life, sometimes the comfort of care means the whole world.
There’s no cure for these diseases, but there is a lot of hope that many of us will see a cure within our lifetimes.
