As the whole world knows by now, seniors have been hit much harder than other populations because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Because of this, pretty much all states have instituted stricter guidelines to help protect this vulnerable population and the people that work with them.
The novel coronavirus has shaken the world, and it has forced senior care companies to completely rethink how they provide their service. This has certainly been a tough time, but senior care is all about keeping seniors safe and happy. As times and conditions change, this continues to be the main overall goal.
Some states have struggled more than others when it comes to establishing and enforcing guidelines to keep elderly residents of senior care facilities safe. However, states that have had poor guidelines here have seen devastating results. Luckily, most every state has changed how they are approaching nursing homes at this point and seniors are safer as a result of it. Hopefully, this is something that continues, even as the virus recedes as there is still a very real danger right now.
Other states are being more proactive right now. While we all know that COVID-19 is incredibly dangerous, there are other dangers that have emerged when it comes to senior safety during this time. One of the most prominent of these is mental health issues created or exacerbated because of the increased isolation. Some states are trying to combat both of these issues at the same time. For example, the state of Arizona recently instituted new guidelines to help keep residents of nursing homes safe–and still allow visitors. These rules include the presentation of an official negative COVID-19 test result, an attestation that the visitor has been isolated since the test was conducted, the visitor must agree to limited contacted within the facility, the facility must log the visitor’s info for tracing purposes, and the facility must conduct a deep sanitation afterwards. This is inconvenient for sure, but it is a huge step forward toward protecting people, both in and out of the nursing home.
