A recent study that looked at people going through cardiac rehab found that certain minority ethnic groups were less likely to attend treatments than their white counterparts were. This held true across all income levels, according to the research team.
People with an Asian, Hispanic, or Black heritage were less likely to follow through with rehab than white people were.
Health disparities need to be taken very seriously. When some portions of our population have better access to healthcare than others do, the consequences can be severe. Not only is this a discriminatory process, it puts vulnerable individuals at an even greater risk than they already were at. But as this study reveals, these things still happen. Even though we are far more aware of these things today than ever before, for whatever reason, certain populations are not getting the care that they need.
Just to put it in perspective, when cardiovascular rehab is not followed through with, hospital readmission goes up by 18 percent. The need for heart related surgery goes up by 25 percent. Death related to heart disease also goes up by 25 percent. Because of these disparities, certain ethnicities are at a higher risk of an adverse outcome as a result.
There is a chance that some of these disparities occur because of cultural differences and beliefs. For example, there are traditions in some Asian cultures that would not see a cardiologist or attend heart rehab sessions as a first choice. What we think of as medicine here in the U.S. isn’t always what others think. Doctors with cultural competency can help those that are experiencing heart issues to navigate the best treatments to allow them to stay true to their beliefs and still get treated.
If a loved one has heart issues, they may need a higher level of care than you and your family are able to provide. This happens, and it certainly doesn’t say anything about your love for the people in your family. In fact, looking for care that is more qualified to help support your elderly loved ones is usually the most loving thing that you can do to support them as they age. Senior care is a big thing, and there are more options out there when it comes to help than ever before. Looking at your loved ones’ needs and their goals when it comes to aging can often help you to find the best type of care with a lot more ease.
