Exercise is good for you. I think that we all know this. One of the big issues that we face is that finding a type of exercise that we enjoy is difficult for some of us. It’s not about time, even if we say it is. When it comes down to it, we always find time for the things that are most important to us. Which is why exercise takes a backseat a lot of the time. We know it’s good for us, but because it’s not something that we enjoy, it’s not important to us.
The trick is to find a balance, which is a lot easier said than done, of course. Exercise is important, but sometimes the short term discomfort of it doesn’t seem like it is worth the long term benefits. So we need to find something that offsets this. We need to find something that makes exercise fun for us.
One method that has proven to be successful is to gamify exercise. This is what competitive sports are, after all. You probably have fond memories of playing Little League or running track in high school. Not because baseball or running were the best thing in the world, but because you liked the thrill of competition and the friendships that were created.
Why not bring this feeling back? It doesn’t matter if you’re playing in the league championship or with a few friends. Games are fun and it can help bring an element of exercise back into your life. It doesn’t even matter how old you are. There’s some sort of exercise out there for everyone. Gaming systems like the Nintendo and the XBox have even created video games that can help you to exercise competitively without leaving the house. It might not seem like much, but even a little bit of exercise can go a long way and help you to live a healthier life during your senior years. It can even help seniors to find better health and more enjoyment.
Just what staying active will look like varies from person to person. Each individual has a different set of needs in this area, just like each individual has a different set of needs when it comes to senior care in general. Speaking with a doctor or a professional that is knowledgeable about your elderly loved one’s needs when it comes to exercise is important so that you can help them do what is best for them and not pursue something that will do more harm than good. Even if exercise isn’t something that comes naturally to you, there really is something out there for everyone when it comes to health benefits and enjoyment.
Exercise should be customized to meet the needs of the individual. Senior care should be customized, too. No two people will need exactly the same things. You wouldn’t tell everyone that jogging is the best form of exercise, and you shouldn’t tell everyone that a nursing home is the best type of care. You have a lot of other options.
