In the early stages of the coronavirus, there were a lot of rumors going around about what could slow its spread. Some sources said that disinfectant could kill it, while others said that sunlight was the key to stopping its spread. Partly because of these widespread claims, there was a big spike in Vitamin D sales.
But is there a positive correlation between Vitamin D use and maintaining safety from COVID-19?
This is tricky to talk about without upsetting anyone. There is evidence that Vitamin D does help protect against the virus, but this information is anecdotal in nature. It doesn’t mean that it’s untrue, it just means that it has not been scientifically proven at this point. It might help, it might not. The short answer to the complicated question is that we don’t know for certain whether it has an impact yet. It will likely be months–or longer–before we have a definite answer about this topic.
One of the reasons why people have pointed to Vitamin D as a potential safeguard against the illness is that many people who have had COVID-19 have suffered from a deficiency of this vitamin. Because this was lacking, the argument is that an increased amount would have helped prevent the outcome. Again, this is only anecdotal and has not been verified by research. Additionally, there are plenty of cases of COVID that have occurred where Vitamin D levels were normal. It’s hard to draw any sort of correlation in one direction or the other from the data at this point.
Vitamin D does have other benefits, though. It has been shown to help with energy levels and mental health, especially when it comes to depression and anxiety. Doctors often recommend it for elderly folk because of this. Even if it doesn’t help defend you from the coronavirus there are definitely benefits to taking it.
With all the rumors going on about COVID-19, it’s often really hard to know what is true and what is not. This is not meant to be any sort of medical advice, but rather highlighting one of the supplements that has come under the spotlight in recent months. Vitamin D, and other vitamins, certainly have a place in a well balanced diet and lifestyle, but please speak with a doctor before you begin taking anything. Even something simple like Vitamin D has the potential to interact with other medications or conditions. Speaking with a doctor is absolutely essential before you begin taking anything, even things like this that are readily available over the counter.
