Lately, there has been a lot of speculation that there are certain factors that are making the issues that the senior care industry as a whole is facing even worse. One of the problems that has been flouted in the media is that the for profit sector of the care industry has only made care issues worse.
There are some issues with for profit care for sure, but it’s not because of the financial structure. The problem resides with the care industry in general.
For profit care isn’t inherently bad. There are a lot of good things about this type of care. One of the biggest is that the drive to stay competitive in the marketplace can lead to improvements in the quality of care that is given. No consumers want to spend money on an inferior product when shopping at the grocery store. If you have the choice between a good phone and a great phone with no difference in price, you’re going to go with the superior product every time. This encourages tech companies to keep innovating and keep the cost of their products within a certain price range. The competition of a profit driven marketplace isn’t bad.
But there is the potential for abuse, and we’ve seen that happen, unfortunately, over the last several years. If you buy a phone that is supposed to be a high quality product and it keeps breaking on you, well, no one is hurt, except in a financial sense. It’s inconvenient, but it’s not life threatening. If this happens in a human service like senior care, there’s the potential for people to be physical or emotionally hurt. Cutting corners in the care business has very real consequences and lives are impacted.
This isn’t because of the for profit marketplace. It’s because of greed, laziness, and a lack of accountability. If these things were improved upon, a for profit care system would have much better results.
Here at Paradise In-Home Care, we do what we can on a daily basis to help. We can’t change the business on a large scale, but we can improve on what we do so that the people in our communities are safer. Incorporating background checks, advanced trainings, and encouraging oversight are all easy things to do for our employees, and that results in a much better senior care experience for the people that we work with.
We are in this line of work because we love people and want to help. But that’s not what everyone in this business wants, unfortunately. We’d like to think that most people are in this industry because they have good hearts, but we can’t speak beyond our own staff. We only hire the best caregivers, those that we are convinced really want to help and give back to their communities. We make sure these things are in place, that they’ve been trained, and we are confident that they will give your family the very best before they walk out our doors. You deserve only the best.
Please let us know if you have questions about this. We’d love to hear from you!
