We’ve known for a long time that high blood pressure levels lead to health issues. What we know now is the extent of what that can look like, and just what health impairments are linked to high blood pressure over the long run.
The SPRINT studies have played a large part in this knowledge. SPRINT stands for Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial, and it’s examined several aspects of health over the years. In 2015, the SPRINT study revealed that intensive interventions in lowering blood pressure could have a drastic reduction when it came to the number of people that died from cardiovascular disease.
More recently, it was found that keeping systolic blood pressure levels at 120 or lower in adults over the age of 50 reduced the instances of heart attack, heart failure, and stroke by about 25 percent. Death rates were reduced by 27 percent. If this was sustained over the long haul, this reduction in health crises persisted. More than 9,300 people were studied in this project.
This information came out of the SPRINT trial, as mentioned above. It was led by a doctor from Wake Forest University. This newest component of it was published in JAMA Cardiology. This has been an ongoing and comprehensive study, and it’s already had a massive impact on the medical world. Hopefully, the advances in our knowledge and preventative measures will continue to grow and help those suffering from cardiovascular disease, or might be at risk of it.
Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer in the United States.
