Cancer is devastating by any measurement. My family has been impacted by it, and I’m sure yours has too. But when it comes to the fight against breast cancer, there’s been some major progress. A recent report indicates that those who are diagnosed with breast cancer have a much higher survival rate than they did just 15 years ago.
A report from the University of Toronto states that the survival rate for breast cancer has increased by 2.5 times from what it was in 2007. And this is good news. It means that doctors are coming up with new and more effective ways of treating those that have been diagnosed with this type of cancer. It means that those who have breast cancer now are more likely to live a long and full life than they were not too long ago.
The increased number in the number of survivors does bring about some new health challenges, though. Someone does not come out of a battle with breast cancer without health concerns. Cancer survivors have a long struggle ahead of them, even after they have received a clean bill of health. Unfortunately, survivors of cancer continue to need help, especially older cancer survivors.
One of the other ongoing issues for survivors of cancer and other major health issues is the fact that they may need more support with their activities of daily life as they continue to age. In fact, another thing that was uncovered by this study was that many of those that survived breast cancer later were diagnosed with other serious illnesses or diseases. Alzheimer’s disease, liver disease, stroke, and heart disease were all found to be more common in breast cancer survivors than within the general population. These all come with their own challenges.
The research team published their findings in the Journal of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network. There’s always room for growth in this field of research, but hopefully this can help to spur on future researchers and act as a starting point. This is one of the benefits of research like this.
Regardless of the needs that an older loved one is facing, finding the right senior care is an essential part of aging well. Senior care can’t help to treat cancer, but it can help someone who has survived cancer to get through their days with more ease and grow older where and how they want. For example, in-home care doesn’t provide medical treatment, but it can give someone the support that they require to stay in their own home.
