By now, a lot of us know that a good pair of shoes can make a big difference. This is especially true for people that spend a lot of time on their feet during the work day. Having a comfortable pair of shoes that supports and compensates for bodily imbalances can make for a much more comfortable, pain-free day. Athletes have known this for years, and it’s starting to catch on amongst those of us that are not athletically inclined, too. And that’s a good thing.
But did you know that the right pair of footwear might also be helpful when it comes to stroke recovery? A new therapeutic shoe designed at the University of South Florida has just gone through clinical trials to see whether or not the shoe can actually help patients more effectively recover from a stroke. The shoe showed great progress in those trials and has been granted a patent. It is scheduled to be released for sale to the public by the end of 2019.
The shoe is called the iStride device for now, and it is helping those who have lost the ability to walk because of a stroke regain that skill. The device is put on the good leg of the patient and helps to move it backward, exaggerating the motion of stepping and helping the individual using it by forcing them to strengthen the leg that was impacted by the stroke.
Technology is amazing, and when there is an economic incentive for that technology to be put to good use, the products that we find emerging on the marketplace can be quite astounding. This shoe is one of those things. Stroke recovery has long been relegated to the medical field, but therapy isn’t something that needs to take place in a doctor’s office.
Stroke recovery can be a long process. Overcoming the disability created by stroke can be a lifelong process. Some people never fully recover from it and some do pass away because of stroke related complications. However, there are things that can be done to help ensure a better recovery.
