Eating more fish might be the next step to help improve your heart health.
A new study indicates that individuals who eat two or more servings of fish per week can help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease in high risk individuals. This includes people who have already suffered from a heart attack or a stroke in the past. A diet that is rich in oily fish, those that are rich in the Omega-3 fatty acids that have long been associated with improved health, have been found to help cut the risk of the negative impact of cardiovascular issues. The risk of a stroke or a heart attack was reduced by about one-sixth, according to this widespread survey. Data from many different sources was compiled for the purposes of this study.
The unique thing about this survey was that they confirmed something that was only widely suspected previously. Not only does a diet rich in Omega-3 fatty acids help people that are already living heart healthy lives stay that way, there is a protective effect for people that have struggled with heart disease in the past. Even people that have already had a heart attack or a stroke can reap the benefits of a change in diet.
This study was conducted by McMaster University and looked at data from over 60 countries. The team of researchers published their findings in JAMA Internal Medicine.
Now, this is not to say that a change in diet is an instant fix. If you have heart disease or if you’re unsure about your health, it is very important to work with a doctor to ensure that you are taking the right steps to stay healthy and avoid major health issues. However, a change in diet might help to compound the good things that working with a doctor can accomplish. It’s just one more thing that can be done to help yourself live a healthier and longer life.
Things like this even have the potential to help delay the need for senior care. If a stroke or heart attack can be prevented, some of the factors that would lead to someone being dependent on care can be eliminated. Again, this isn’t a guarantee, but it can go a long way toward improving the odds in your favor.
What if you or a loved one don’t like fish? Luckily, fish is not the only food that is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids. Olives and olive oil, pecans, and flax seed also tend to have high levels of this nutrient. If you’re not sold on a food, fish oil can be taken as a dietary supplement.
As I mentioned before, taking steps to help improve health can pay off down the road. Even a few small steps to live a healthier life right now can improve your long term health. It can help prevent the need for long term care and improve the quality of life that you and your family members live. If you would like to learn more about what you can do to improve your heart health, please speak with your doctor about this topic.
