A new study out of the University of Pittsburgh indicates that deep brain stimulation has the potential to bring immediate improvement when it comes to the limb mobility that stroke victims experience.
The study looked at people who had lost mobility in their arms and hands after a stroke. They found that deep brain stimulation helped these people to see improvement in functioning and strength immediately after the deep brain stimulation was applied.
Neurotechnology is a field that is quickly growing, but there’s not yet a lot of information about it. Using this technology to promote healing, wellbeing, and increase independence is currently a wide open area of study. There’s the potential that it could help a lot of seniors to live better lives moving forward.
Paralysis is one of the most prevalent issues that occurs after a stroke happens. It limits someone’s ability to move around and live their life as they once did. Extensive assistance, including the need for professional level senior care, can become a necessity after a stroke occurs. While there are a lot of great resources out there (including Paradise In-Home Care), a much better solution is to avoid the need for that care in the first place. This research may be a step in minimizing the amount of paralysis that occurs as a result of stroke in the future.
The team published their findings in the journal, Nature Communications. And while this research does give scholars insight into the brain mechanisms that are impacted by a stroke, there is a lot more understanding needed before we can fully give stroke victims the care and attention that they need to better enhance their likelihood of a full recovery after a stroke does happen.
Of course, there’s always more research needed in this area if we are going to make lasting improvements in the quality of life that our elderly loved ones experience. Helping to bring immediate improvement back into the life of stroke victims is important, but there are always places that we can improve upon how we do this. Hopefully, you and your family members never have to experience a stroke and the long recovery process that can occur afterwards. But if you do, it’s good to know that there are people out there fighting to make sure that your life will be better.
