A new study shows just how important the little things that we often take for granted really are. This study states that there is a strong correlation between those that do household chores daily and a reduced likelihood of heart disease.
The research, which came out of the University of California at San Diego, found that women who were active for four or more hours per day around the house doing chores and other household tasks were 43 percent less likely to suffer from heart disease than those who were active for less than two hours per day. When it comes to stroke, the active portion of the population was 30 percent less likely to suffer a stroke. They were also 62 percent less likely to pass away because of a cardiovascular related event.
We tend to think about exercise as something that requires a conscious effort on our part, something like going out for a jog or going to the gym. According to this study, it doesn’t need to be strenuous exercise, or even what we would typically label as “exercise.” It just needs to be active movement for there to be some sort of benefit when it comes to building heart healthy factors.
This is good news. A lot of us don’t like to exercise, even though we know it’s good for us. And for those that don’t think about adopting exercise into their daily lifestyle until later on in life, it can be really hard to start a new habit. But this research shows that you don’t need to be an athlete to reap the benefits of exercise for your heart health, you just need to keep moving.
Heart disease can have a devastating impact on an individual and the family members that are close to them. When someone suffers from a stroke or a heart attack, they will often need advanced help for months (or longer) afterwards. Some people never fully recover from the health complications that such an event can produce. Unfortunately, heart disease continues to be the number one killer in the United States; it’s clear that we need to help promote heart health however we can if we’re going to see improvements here. And when that comes to the health of those that we love, these improvements become even more important than ever before.
