It’s getting to be that time of year again… Flu Season.
It’s easy to forget about the flu, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. But the flu still presents a very real danger to us, especially for the older individuals in our society. The flu tends to impact those who are the most health compromised the hardest. While a healthy middle aged person might only be down for a couple days, the flu can lead to serious health problems for the elderly. The flu vaccine isn’t a perfect defense against the flu, but it can drastically reduce the amount of risk that someone faces from it.
The flu shot might also have other benefits, too. A new study from the American Academy of Neurology indicates that getting the flu vaccine might lower the risk that some groups of people have when it comes to suffering from a stroke. In the past, studies have indicated that when you get the flu, you’re more likely to suffer from a stroke. Therefore, lowering your risk of getting the flu may actually lower your risk of suffering from a stroke, too. Over the 14 year course of this study, more than 85,000 people were observed for data collection purposes.
The team published their findings in one of the latest issues of the medical journal, Neurology. Hopefully, this helps more people to get targeted health advice when it comes to prevention–both for the flu and for strokes.
Of course, this isn’t meant to be taken as blanket medical advice. It’s important that you work with your doctor to come up with a solution that works best for you and your family. A doctor that knows your medical background and your situation can give you more targeted information about what will be best for your family and help you to weigh out the pros and cons of any sort of medical advice.
Personalized direction is always best when it comes to medical and care decisions. That’s one of the reasons why we are such strong supporters of in-home care. It allows seniors to get customized senior care in a place where it will be most welcome–their own home.
And while this might be the preference for the vast majority of seniors, it’s not always realistic. This can sometimes be the case with individuals that have suffered from a severe stroke. They might want to stay in their homes, but because of the magnitude of the health and mobility issues that they are facing, this isn’t always a realistic choice. This is why it’s important to understand and account for the needs of your loved ones.
Working with a trained professional can help you to better achieve this. And we’d love to be that team of professionals for you. If you’d like to learn more about your loved one’s care needs and get connected to the best resources to meet them, please feel free to get in touch with us. We can schedule a free consultation session with you over the phone and start the conversation regarding the best way to help your loved ones thrive during their senior years.
