New information from the Lo Jolla Institute for Immunology indicates that Parkinson’s disease might be, at least partially, an autoimmune illness and not solely a neurological disease. Researchers from the institute published their findings recently in the research journal, Nature Communications.
In this study, the researchers found that signs of autoimmunity disorders were often present years before a diagnosis of Parkinson’s was made. For many, this was the first sign that some sort of larger health issue was present. And because this might be a new warning sign that doctors can detect, it could lead to better health outcomes for those who have the disease.
Researchers believe that because of the noted increased correlation between autoimmune disease and Parkinson’s, there might be a way to efficiently detect the disease far earlier than ever before. This is still under speculation, but there’s a good chance that these new findings might be exactly what’s needed to help those who suffer from Parkinson’s long before they have noticeable signs of the disease. Like a lot of other illnesses, the sooner that Parkinson’s is detected, the sooner and more effectively it can be treated. Hopefully, this is the first step toward better treatment.
The symptoms of Parkinson’s occur because of cell death. If this cell death can be prevented, then the person with the disease can not just delay the onset of some of the more severe symptoms of the disease, but also prolong their life and improve the quality of the life that they live.
