We all know that exercise is beneficial to us, right? Exercise helps improve health and has even been shown to help reduce the likelihood that someone will suffer from dementia later on in life. Exercise has also been shown to keep our bodies younger, helping to establish muscle tone that can help prevent falls later on in life. More muscle mass also can protect the body from serious damage if a fall were to occur.
Exercise is often the prescription for a lot of health issues. It can help alleviate symptoms of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and more. And it doesn’t even need to be intense activity, like running or swimming. Simple things, like basic arm exercises, can also provide someone with these benefits.
And exercise is probably a lot easier to get in than you might think. Oddly enough, a new study indicates that to see health benefits from arm exercises, it isn’t actually necessary to exercise both arms. A study from Edith Cowan University reveals that when only one arm is exercised, the other sees benefits as well. Researchers did not venture a guess as to why believe that this is, but they did say that this has huge potential for those that are going through physical rehabilitation.
This can also be applied to people that are recovering from a stroke. If someone loses mobility on one side of the body, this study indicates that perhaps rehab can begin far more quickly. Exercises can be done on the healthier side of the body, and even though mobility might be severely limited, there is evidence that this can still help to improve muscle tone, coordination, and strength. More research is needed here of course, but it’s a big step toward helping people that have had a stroke get back to a normal lifestyle.
If a loved one has had a stroke or has any other type of disability, getting exercise becomes a lot more difficult. But that doesn’t mean that it’s impossible. Helping seniors to stay active isn’t always a concern when that person resides within a nursing home or assisted living facility, but that doesn’t diminish its importance. Helping the people that you love to stay as healthy as possible is important, and encouraging exercise is part of this. That’s why we value customizable care so much. When a senior has access to better care, care targeted toward meeting their needs and goals, that care is going to be more worthwhile and more effective.
That’s precisely what we strive for here at Paradise In-Home Care. Our goal is to give care how and where it’s needed. This might mean providing supervision to someone while they do their at-home stroke recovery exercises, preparing a meal, or helping someone to get to the bathroom and bathe. In-home care covers a lot of different areas, and because it is personalized, it tends to be much better at helping the person in need meet their goals.
