At various points over the last couple decades, we’ve been given different bits of information regarding eggs and their place in a healthy diet. At one point we were told eggs were healthy, and then that they were high in cholesterol and should be avoided. Then we were told that they were healthy and we should eat them. The wisdom regarding eggs has changed a few times over the decades.
So, now that new research about eggs and potential health benefits are coming out, it’s natural to be a little bit skeptical.
New research, published in the journal, eLife, indicates that a diet that includes eggs has some extra benefits when it comes to heart health. The research paper stated that eating up to one egg per day had the potential to lower the risk of heart disease and stroke when compared to people that avoided eating eggs altogether.
Yes, eggs still do contain a large amount of cholesterol in them. But not all cholesterol is bad cholesterol. When balanced with other foods, exercise, and health lifestyles, this research team seemed to believe that the benefits of eating an egg a day outweighed the potential for harm.
Of course, it’s important to always speak with a medical professional if you have questions about your diet or health. Before you make any sort of dietary changes, it’s important that you understand the risks of doing so. Many people can benefit from a change of diet because it can help lower weight and provide other health benefits. Still, it’s important to work with a professional to ensure that everything goes smoothly.
The researchers believe that eggs are helpful for heart health because they increase metabolites within the bloodstream. Over 4,700 participants were looked at during this study. The link between diet and heart health was examined in this group.
