Age related disease is a very real issue for people who are of advanced years. As the title suggests, these are any diseases or illnesses that are more prevalent in those that are elderly, and usually manifest as a result of health complications that arise as someone gets older.
Recently, researchers identified a group of molecules that can enable cells to repair damage that occurs because of age, disease, and other things. This gives doctors the potential to help those that are dealing with the loss of tissue in organs, muscles, or perhaps even bones to heal and fight off some of the negative aspects of aging that occurs. There’s a lot of research that needs to be done here before this kind of therapy is going to be used in humans, but this initial stage of research indicates that it might be feasible in the near future.
As people age, tissue damage becomes more and more widespread. This is one of the reasons why elderly folk are often at a greater risk of disease and illness than younger folk are. Ultimately, the mitochondria in cells stop working as effectively as they once did, leading to more and more health issues occurring. Mitochondria act as the “battery” within a cell. When they are defective, parts of organs can stop functioning.
Researchers believe that this can be avoided in some cases with this newly developed group of treatment molecules. This is a huge step forward in treating elderly folk and medical issues.
The team from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem had their findings published in the medical journal, Autophagy.
They also hope that this discovery can have a positive impact when it comes to fighting Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. These diseases spread in similar ways, with plaque build ups on brain cells leading to neuron loss within the brain. As more cells die, day to day tasks become more difficult to perform. At this point, there’s no cure for either of these diseases. Hopefully, this discovery can help researchers to understand how to better treat these diseases in the future.
