We are likely to see some big changes in the senior care industry in the coming years. The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed weaknesses in our care system and has thrust them forward for all to see. The fact that so many people have had to suffer is a tragedy, but now that these concerns are being addressed, it would be a waste of what we’ve seen to not address these things, fix them, and move forward so that in the future the quality of care that people receive can be improved.
The bill that President Biden has proposed is a start, but it’s going to take more than just pumping money into senior care to improve the quality of assistance that people receive. It will take training, awareness, and attention to detail. It will take finding the right people to provide the right services so that the needs of seniors who can’t completely take care of themselves are met in a safe and dignified way. It will take oversight and accountability to make sure that this happens in a fair and legal way, giving dignity and respect to all involved.
Change needs to happen on a wide scale. But we can make change happen on a small scale right now. We can ensure that we are not moving a loved one into a nursing home because it’s easier than other alternatives. We can pinpoint what the needs of our loved ones are, and then find the right care to help them meet those needs as fully as possible. This might look different from person to person, but this is where the individual shines through. We owe it to the people that we love to help connect them with the senior care experience that will give them the best results and help to make them as happy as possible during their senior years.
This isn’t easy to do, but it is much easier to pursue this as individuals than it is for the care industry as a whole to shift.
Currently, we are experiencing a shift in public perception. The public isn’t looking at care the way that they once did. The pandemic, and the care business as a whole’s general inability to respond in a positive way to it, has really changed our thoughts regarding nursing homes, senior care, and the help that our family members receive with these things. Although the care industry has failed a lot of people, because this has been brought out into the spotlight, it will be a lot easier to fix these things and change them moving forward.
This would have happened eventually–a lot of warning bells have been going off regarding senior care for a long time. But there were not enough people really aware of these issues to make it a topic of discussion for the average individual. That’s changed. Let’s not waste this opportunity that we’ve been given to help others.
Change isn’t a bad thing. Change can be good. This can be a great opportunity to revitalize the senior care industry and help our loved ones get the help they need.
