Aspirin has received a lot of attention lately because new studies are shedding light on its efficacy when it comes to preventing heart attacks. Conventional wisdom has long said that aspirin can help to prevent a heart attack, but this is turning out to be only partially true. While aspirin has been shown to help prevent future heart attacks in those that have already suffered from one in the past, it’s helpfulness when it comes to preventing a first heart attack is still debatable.
In fact, many health organizations are now stating that aspirin should not be used to prevent a first heart attack. Canadian officials are the latest to point to the dangers of taking aspirin regularly to prevent a first heart attack. A new study from the University of Alberta indicates that regular aspirin usage increases the risk of internal bleeding by three times, and the risks of using it on a daily basis outweigh the benefits that it creates in those that have never had a heart attack.
According to doctors, this bleeding is not minor. It can result in severe health concerns and can be detrimental to someone’s wellbeing. If left unchecked, the health concerns raised could even result in premature death.
What does this mean for you and your family? First, it means you should speak with a doctor if you haven’t already. Aspirin is not a bad medication, nor should it be avoided altogether. It just means that it should be used when recommended by a doctor and under a doctor’s guidance. The intention behind using it may be well and good, but like many other drugs, it can easily be misused and do more hard than good. Consulting with a doctor should be your first step before using any sort of medication.
Next, be aware of any other health needs that an older loved one might have. Sometimes, it can be really easy to not pay attention to these things, especially if you spend a lot of time with someone. A slow physical or mental decline can be really hard to spot.
