A lot of different professions require background checks. Teachers, those involved in law enforcement or government positions, and people that work in finance tend to all require background checks before someone can work in these professions.
And for good reason. These positions all require a good deal of trust. And that’s exactly why those that work in senior care positions should all be required to have background checks. Senior caregivers are placed in a position of trust on a daily basis. In-home caregivers are even more so because of the natural structure of how care is given. A professional goes into someone’s home, often working in a one on one basis for long periods of time. If this person is not trustworthy, then bad things could happen.
This is why we are strong proponents of background checks for all people that work in senior care. Some states are stricter than others regarding this, but regardless of where you live, you should insist that the service that you are going through–for whatever type of senior care that you might be looking for–relies on background checks for the people that will be working with your family. It’s one of the easiest and fastest ways to ensure that your loved one will remain safe while they receive care.
A background check isn’t going to find everything and it’s not going to solve every problem. But what a background check will do is identify a pattern of abusive or problematic behaviors in an individual and act as one more safeguard when it comes to protecting your family and those that you love. It’s not a perfect solution, but when used with other methods of identifying issues, it acts as a line of defense, protecting the people that you entrust to a caregiver.
This is one of the many reasons why we conduct a background check on every single person that we employee prior to hiring them. We want to ensure that the people we help are kept safe in every single way, and making sure that only those that have good intentions and no history of problematic behavior are working with the families that we help is one way to make this happen. When you work with Paradise In-Home Care, you can be assured that background checks have been conducted and only the best candidates for employment pass through our doors.
With that said, it’s still important to provide ongoing training to those that we employ when it comes to preventing abuse. Unfortunately, a lot of the issues that come up in the world of senior care are not always easy to prevent. Sometimes, neglect and abuse happen because of forgetfulness, laziness, or lack of awareness. This is where ongoing training helps. It identifies what these things look like, helps caregivers to avoid them, and puts tools in place for individuals to get help before something like this happens. Again, your family does not deserve to go through something like this, so we put every preventive measure in place that we can to make sure it doesn’t happen.
