If you have an elderly loved one that has been hospitalized recently, there are probably a lot of questions still lingering. What does the future look like? What future care is going to be needed? What changes will we need to make as a family? These are all big questions, and they can be a big source of stress, especially if the hospitalization caught you and your family off guard.
There’s no way that I can give you the answers to all of these questions. However, in order to help you out as much as I can in a single blog post, I’ve put together a few tips to help you get things moving in the right direction after a loved one has been in the hospital.
Act Fast
Care decisions often need to be made quickly after a loved one has been in the hospital. Post-acute care can be difficult to decide on, and a lot of the times it is an area of expertise that people don’t know much about. The hospital or another doctor might have recommendations to make, but ultimately this decision must be made by the family. Knowing what’s right will ensure that you make the best decision, but if you’re not familiar with this area of care, that can be a daunting task.
A fast decision does not equal an inaccurate one. You owe it to your family to be able to make an educated decision, so some research on your part is needed. Ideally, you would start this process before you will ever need to make a decision. If not, the sooner you start, the better.
Act Intelligently
Each family and each situation is a little different. What you and your family are going through is unique. Doctors can help you to make a good decision as far as care goes, but you will need to weigh all of the factors, such as needs, finance, social activity, and more, on your own. A smart decision will ultimately account for what’s best for your parent.
