We’ve all heard the term “essential worker” tossed around lately. This is the term for people that have to keep showing up to work day in and day out regardless of what is going on in the world with illness, pandemics, racial tensions, or whatever other tragedy might surface. We might even think of these people as heroes. After all, they are going out into uncertain conditions and doing their job. Sometimes this is really hard to do, especially because of the invisible nature of COVID-19. We can’t be 100 percent certain about the disease, where it might be, and whether or not we will get it if we leave our homes. It’s scary, and the essential workers that brave this fear every day really are heroes.
A term that isn’t heard as much is “essential caregiver.” This is likely exactly what you think. They are a caregiver that provides an essential service to someone. In some communities, essential caregivers are providing assistance to the elderly–especially in assisted living facilities and nursing homes where the senior population has had significantly reduced amounts of interaction with the world around them. Essential caregivers are people who are able to go into care centers and provide assistance, circumventing the rules that place restrictions on entering these types of facilities.
There are a couple things to know about essential caregivers. One, they are not breaking any laws or mandates by doing what they do. This is why the term “essential” is added to their title. But really, caregivers have been essential all along. Adding the word in front of it doesn’t change the job, just how we view the importance of it. It places a higher priority on senior care and helping those in your family that need it.
Caregivers have always been essential. Seniors often need that extra bit of support that non-medical caregivers provide. It helps them to stay safe and healthy while they go through their days. Caregivers can provide this service in a nursing home or facility, but they can also do it right in the home, in the form of in-home care. However it’s supplied, this is absolutely vital to the wellbeing of thousands of seniors throughout the country. It’s one hundred percent essential.
Life has changed, though. How we provide care is changing, too. If you have a loved one that needs a little bit of help to get through each day safely, then it’s likely that you have a lot of questions about how senior care can be administered in a safe way. This is a completely reasonable question, especially with everything that is going on nowadays.
