Incontinence is one of those things that nobody wants to talk about. You might have even been a bit uncomfortable opening up this blog article to read. I sure was uncomfortable when I decided that it was something that needed to be addressed.
But then I realized that this discomfort that we feel about this topic is exactly why I needed to write this piece. It’s an uncomfortable topic, but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t impact people’s lives. People typically bear with this issue privately and let it have a negative impact on their ability to associate with others. But it doesn’t need to be this way.
First, ensure that your loved one does not have any unmet needs. Incontinence can occur for a lot of reasons, including mobility, cognitive decline, and other things. Knowing exactly what is going on with your loved one will help you to take more effective steps toward helping them. If you’re unsure where to start, consult with a physician. They will be able to help find more detailed information and give you a better sense of the direction you should go.
Oftentimes, this can be all that’s needed, but sometimes it’s not enough. Doctors are working on making incontinence less of an issue for the future. Implantable devices seem to be the next step toward helping people to regain control over their issues with toileting. A new device promises to do just that. Developed by researchers at Penn State, the “Smart Wrap” implant is designed to help those that struggle with urinary incontinence take back some control over their life. The device is still in the early stages of development, but researchers believe that it holds a lot of promise. They hope to have it available for the public in the not too distant future.
Regardless of the issues that your older loved one might be facing, there are solutions out there that can help and bring comfort to them. This is true if they suffer from incontinence, are grappling with dementia, or have mobility issues because of a physical disability. Even if there’s not a cure, so to speak, there is always something that can be done to make their quality of life a little bit better. There’s always something that can bring a bit of relief.
