Caregivers often work tirelessly, putting the needs of others above their own needs. Unfortunately, this is also the number one cause of caregiver burnout. While it is noble to put others above yourself, it’s not always a sustainable practice. If we don’t care for our own needs–physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual, something negative begins to happen. The care that we give to others begins to diminish.
This can end up having really bad results. We’ve all heard horror stories on the news of seniors being mistreated and it’s easy to think that this kind of thing will never happen to our family. No one wants this to happen. But when we’re tired, stressed, and worn out, it’s a lot easier for mistakes to happen. Think about why you wouldn’t operate heavy machinery if you were sleepy. It’s way too easy to make a tiny mistake and have someone hurt. When we’re not rested and ready to go, the quality of the work that we provide diminishes. When people’s safety is on the line, this is not a risk that we want to take.
The good news is that there’s help out there, regardless of the kind of care that you provide. If you’re a family caregiver, finding a few minutes of rest might seem like an impossible dream right now. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Regardless of where you live, there are most likely resources out there that can help you to carry some of the burden of helping an older family member out. This doesn’t necessarily need to be a permanent thing, either. Care can often be customized to meet unique needs. This is why we value the in-home care model so much; it allows for greater personalization for families.
If you’re located in the San Francisco Bay Area, please know that we are one of those resources. Whether you’re looking for a few hours here and there of respite care so that you can take care of a few personal errands, or if you are looking for a full-time in-home caregiver, we can help make your life a little bit easier.
Even if you’re not sure what you’re looking for, please feel free to give us a call. One of our trained caregivers would love to sit down with you–in person or over Zoom–and discuss your situation, your goals, and what senior care might look like to help you meet those goals. This is a free consultation service that we provide and it comes with no obligation on your part. The purpose is to help people, even those that might not necessarily be looking for in-home care.
We know just how hard finding rest can be when you’re caring for someone else on a constant basis. Some families thrive in this environment, but not all. And even those that thrive need help every now and again. That’s what we’re here for.
