It’s no secret that the elderly are at a high level of risk of the coronavirus. Records from the state of Colorado indicate that about 40 percent of the people that have died there have been in nursing homes. All across the country, this is a trend that seems to be holding true. Nursing homes and senior care facilities are at a high risk of the disease because of the closeness in proximity each resident has and because of the advanced age and other health problems that are part of nursing home life.
This is quite alarming. And it begs a very important question: why weren’t more care agencies practicing safe procedures beforehand? Unfortunately, a lot of nursing homes are understaffed. A lot have enough caregivers, but those caregivers aren’t fully prepared or committed to their jobs. And a lot of nursing homes thought they were fully prepared, but weren’t.
This is a learning process for a lot of us. Life has changed. How we care for others is changing. At the same time, there are standards that all senior care services should be applying to make sure that the people they are helping are kept safe. Just like you want a qualified caregiver working with you in your home, you want that caregiver to be practicing safeguards to keep those around them as healthy as possible, too. Especially in times like this, you want to know what’s being done and you want to have evidence that these measures work.
Many senior care facilities already have strong measures in place to make sure that seniors are kept safe. For those that don’t, this has been a big wake up call. Hopefully, it inspires those that run facilities to implement more effective ways to keep the people that they are entrusted safer and healthy, even during times of crisis. This has been a scary time for all of us, but when you are looking at a senior care service to work with your family, you expect the best. That means in both good times and bad. In normal times and those of health scares. You deserve the best and your family deserves the best.
