Whenever you turn on the news, it seems like there is always a horror story out there about an elderly individual that was mistreated. Just recently, I saw a news story about a woman in North Dakota that was found guilty of aggravated assault toward a senior resident of the care center that she worked at.
In this case, the woman was a certified nurse’s aide, and the injuries that the older individual sustained reportedly happened while a transfer lift was taking place. And although the injuries could very well be accidental, the injuries occurred because the lift was not done properly. Rather than do it the right way, a short cut was taken. We don’t know why, but regardless, it was done incorrectly and someone was seriously hurt as a result.
Things like this are terrifying if you have an older loved one that is in need of care. No one deserves this. No one deserves to even worry about something like this happening. You and the people that you love deserve better.
Abuse of any sort is never okay. But the elderly population is especially vulnerable because of things like dementia, disability, increased medical needs, and difficulty with technology. We owe it to all of our family members to take extra steps to keep them safe, but the elderly need a little bit more attention in this area than other members of our family might.
At the end of the day, while there are certainly things that we can do, we can’t do it all. That’s why it is so important that we have multiple other people on our teams that can help in this respect.
When it comes to in-home care, we do everything that we can to take those extra steps to make sure that the people that you love are as safe as possible. Before we even hire someone, we conduct a thorough background check. We check out criminal history to make sure that the people we employ don’t have anything in their past that might indicate that they have hurt or abused someone before. Then, we provide extensive training so that they know what they are doing and how to lovingly help those that they are serving. We provide ongoing training so that our employees are up to date with all of the latest techniques and ideas so that they can keep growing as a professional, too.
Finally, we fully insure and bond our caregivers. We don’t ever anticipate needing to rely on these things, but just in case, we want our families to have as much peace of mind as we can possibly give them.
It’s hard enough having a loved one that needs assistance as they age. Having a care service that you can rely on is just our way of helping to contribute a little bit of relief to you and your family.
As always, please feel free to get in touch with us if you have any questions. We’d love to help in whatever way we can.
