A recent change of law in Minnesota may be a step forward when it comes to protecting senior citizens receiving care in an assisted living facility. In the past, it was required for assisted living facilities in the state of Minnesota to hold two separate licenses for serving their residents. A license was needed for housing, and then a separate one was needed for offering supportive living services. Effective in August of 2021, only one license will now be needed–and it will cover both aspects of these things.
These laws primarily apply to assisted living facilities that serve individuals with dementia, but not necessarily. In reality, assisted living facilities required both in order to help their residents. The changes will impact all facilities in the state. This isn’t a bad thing as it increases the accountability for care facilities and takes strides to better protect residents.
Laws that govern senior care are only helpful when they protect the people that are supposed to be protected. Additionally, laws are most helpful when they can be enforced and the care services that need to make changes can be supported during the transitionary period. The long term efficacy of these changes is yet to be seen, but it looks like it will make things simpler and cheaper for assisted living facilities. And it looks like this will be done without any sacrifices when it comes to guaranteeing that care facilities are doing all the right things to keep residents safe. There’s always a risk that when bureaucratic corners are cut that there will be potential for those that are providing a service to be able to offer a lower quality product. When it comes to senior care, this can be a huge deal and might even put people in danger. Because of the way that this is being approached, it doesn’t look like that will be the case here. Hopefully, this proves to be helpful for care facilities and those that are being cared for.
Paradise In-Home Care is located in the Bay Area, here in California. That’s a long way from Minnesota. However, we’ve found that looking at what is going on in other states–and even other countries–can help us all to improve. If something looks like it is incredibly successful and helpful in another area, we want to know about it. And if possible, we want to apply those concepts in a way that will be beneficial for the people that we serve. So, although it might seem silly to look at rule changes in other states, there’s always a chance that things can be done better where we are.
