According to the American Society for Nutrition, many Americans have passed away because of the lack of certain things within their diet. Specifically, they state that a lot of deaths that have been attributed to cardiovascular disease could have been prevented simply if the person in question’s diet had included more fruits and vegetables.
This was a preliminary study, but the initial results are pretty disturbing. They state that about 1 in 7 cardiovascular disease related deaths are because of diets missing adequate fruits. 1 in 12 deaths were attributed to not eating enough vegetables. This adds up to millions of lives lost each year–and if this data is correct, a lot of these deaths are completely preventable.
The obvious fix to this is quite easy; we need to take steps to ensure that those around us, especially those that need help with meal preparation, are eating right. Current dietary guidelines state that we should have at least five servings of fruits and vegetables each day. Unfortunately, this can be a lot easier to talk about than to actually do, especially when you take into account how busy our lives have become. Still, if this is what it takes to help our families live longer and healthier lives, then it should be a purposeful and powerful step in our daily routines.
Cardiovascular disease is a scary thing, and it is quite prevalent in the United States. It’s the number one killer in our country, and it also contributes to a large number of hospital visits and cases of permanent disability. Strokes are one of the detrimental outcomes that someone suffering from cardiovascular disease might face, and this can easily lead to a life changing disability. Although treatment has improved for this type of disease, prevention is still the best way to proceed. If an improved diet can accomplish this, then we should be urging our elderly loved ones (and younger loved ones, too!) to start eating healthier. If health problems can be avoided, then things like long term care become a lot less necessary.
