Geriatrics is the study of the elderly. It’s usually used in medicine to denote a doctor or medical professional that focuses their attention and treatment on improving the lives of older folk. Unfortunately, it also happens to be one of the most under-represented portions of the medical community. Much like senior care, it has been known for several years that more geriatric doctors are necessary to keep up with the growing population of seniors in our communities. And like the senior care business, mixed results have presented themselves across the country. In some areas, this field is well staffed. In others, a lot more work is needed.
Different solutions have been proposed to attract more doctors to this field, including financial incentives and discounted educational costs. Training all new doctors more extensively in geriatric care as they prepare to graduate med school has also been a proposition. But regardless, it’s clear that the senior population needs a lot more attention than it’s been getting.
The infrastructure bill recently signed into law by President Biden is a start, and a very good one, at that. But much more awareness and attention is still needed. Hopefully, this is an area that continues to garner attention and attract top minds and talents. Our loved ones deserve the best.
Although we work with the senior citizen population, not all professionals that we encounter devote their attention to the elderly. In fact, in the medical community, it’s almost become the norm that seniors see physicians that work mainly with the general population. It is very rare to find doctors that specialize solely in geriatric medicine. The vast majority of the time, this isn’t a big problem. But when seniors face challenges and health difficulties that are unique to their population, having a doctor that is thoroughly versed in geriatric medicine can mean the difference between good care and great care.
This is just one of the many reasons why we do what we do. We’re not doctors, and the in-home care that we provide doesn’t revolve around healthcare or medical services. But by focusing on the unique needs of the individuals that we work with, we can provide a customized type of care that something like a nursing home can’t always do. In-home care allows seniors to stay where they want to stay, with the people that they want to be with, and continue to live their lives as closely as possible to what they once did, all while the growing challenges that they face as they age are addressed.
We’re always happy to talk more about in-home care and what it might look like in your unique circumstances. Give us a call to talk more, ask few questions, or even schedule a free consultation so that we can have a more in depth conversation regarding this. Senior care is a tough topic for many people, so we have taken every measure possible to make it easier for you. Feel free to get in touch today to get started.
