New research into back pain shows that yoga can have a big impact on reducing pain and helping those that struggle with this to live a higher quality of life as a result.
And the research shows that it doesn’t have to be delivered in person. Virtual yoga, when delivered in a therapeutic fashion, can have a positive impact on those that are going through the program.
The team looked at a therapeutic, virtual program that was delivered over a 12 week period. They determined that this was feasible, safe, and effective. In addition to this, because it is something that can be delivered virtually, it is easier for seniors to access–especially those that might be homebound or have difficulty leaving the house. It also can be delivered in a more cost effective manner because of the virtual manner it is distributed in.
Yoga has long been shown to help with flexibility, strength, and reducing pain. Accessing it can be difficult, though. This new research shows that anyone with an internet connection and a screen can benefit from it.
This research comes out of the Cleveland Clinic. The results were published in JAMA Network Open, an online medical journal associated with the American Medical Association. Hopefully, these findings can help more people to receive noninvasive and safe treatment when it comes to the care of their chronic pain. Hopefully, it leads to more comprehensive and effective treatment.
Back pain negatively impacts someone’s quality of life by limiting their mobility, reducing physical activity, and causing difficulty with daily tasks and work. It can often lead to mental health issues like depression and anxiety, social isolation, and strained relationships. Chronic pain disrupts sleep, increases healthcare costs, and reduces income. Over time, it may lead to long-term disability and a lower overall life satisfaction. Effective management requires addressing both physical and psychological aspects of pain. If it goes unchecked, the person dealing with the pain might find themselves at a higher risk of abusing pain medication, too. Some estimates say that about 20 percent of the senior population suffers from chronic lower back pain.
Finding effective methods to help reduce this pain and make life better for those impacted is essential. Pain management is a component of senior life that is often overlooked, but it is essential for the overall wellbeing of people.
In fact, meeting the needs of people wherever they might be is one of the reasons why we are such huge fans of in-home care. It allows seniors to get the specific help that they need to thrive right where they are. In-home care is flexible because it’s delivered in a one on one setting. The caregiver can adapt to meet the unique situation of the person that they are working with.
