More and more, people that are not immediately inside the senior care industry are realizing that there may soon be a care crisis on our hands.
Simply put, there are more seniors in the U.S. than ever before. The Baby Boomer generation is getting older and as they do, their need for care grows. The oldest of this generation have already surpassed age 70. This was the largest increase in the population of our country at the time, and as they age and as their needs grow, the likelihood that senior care is needed will only grow.
Some estimates say that the Baby Boomer generation comprises 40 percent of the U.S. population. And while not all of them will require senior care, many will. Unfortunately, if things stay the way that they are right now, the infrastructure of the care system will not be able to meet all of their needs. Since the pandemic, the understanding that more growth in the care industry has become mainstream information. Steps have been taken to help grow and strengthen the infrastructure. But it’s still not quite enough. We all have a lot more work to do if our elderly loved ones are going to get all of the assistance that they deserve.
In-home care presents a unique alternative to traditional care models, like what we expect from nursing homes or assisted living facilities. Many of the problems that COVID exposed with nursing homes related to the lack of personalized care and attention that nursing homes were providing. In-home care completely alleviates this.
But even with the good that in-home care can accomplish, there are still things missing. More professionals in the field is a big one. We need more caregivers helping seniors. We need more people that are passionate about providing assistance to the people that need it. In-home care is helpful, but it’s only as helpful as the people providing it can allow it to be.
That’s why we see some insurance companies providing incentives for family members to get some training so that they can better help their older loved ones in the home. This is another big step forward. Hopefully, this trend continues to grow.
