The Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, vowed that extensive changes would be made in the Canadian senior care system recently. This report came about because of military involvement in many of the care facilities across the country. Even with members of the military out and assisting seniors and caregivers and ensuring that extra precautions were being taken to keep people safe and healthy, it was noted that there are severe shortages when it comes to staff. A good number of facilities throughout Canada had been operating with less than ideal numbers of staff.
During normal times, these numbers would be potentially dangerous if a couple people called in sick or a minor emergency occurred. When something like COVID-19 occurs, the potential turns into certainty. Many care homes that might have eked by on a day to day basis while shorthanded suddenly found themselves in a position where it was a catastrophe. People were placed in extreme danger because they did not have the assistance that they needed.
Taking action against this, Trudeau promised that widespread changes would be happening so something like this will never happen again.
These changes do not have all of the details fully worked out yet. A lot of them are still in the early stages of contemplation. However, the recent coronavirus pandemic has revealed a lot of shortcomings throughout the entire senior care system. This isn’t just for Canada, but countries across the world. Failures across the United States, especially when it comes to nursing home and assisted living facilities in many states like New York and Florida, have revealed that we collectively need to find a better way to serve the elderly within our communities without putting them at risk. There’s no clear answer to this issue in plainview at this point, but we all know that we can and should do better.
One thing that will happen right away is a new training program to help people get started in the care industry. Graduates of the program are guaranteed a job starting at $26 per hour (Canadian). That’s a huge incentive to get more people into jobs and helping seniors get the help that they need.
We all have a part to play in this. Sometimes it will be a very small part, but that doesn’t mean that we are powerless here. We all can do a little bit something to make senior care better for the people that we love. Sometimes that means caring for a loved one on our own. Sometimes it means researching local care services to ensure that your family gets the best. Sometimes it means making tough decisions.
