Here at the Paradise In-Home Care blog, I often mention the great benefits that using in-home care can bring families. I’m a firm believer that this is usually the best type of senior care for an elderly individual, but I’m also careful to point out that there are exceptions to this. It’s important to go over these so that when you are helping a loved one find their ideal senior care that you are truly helping them out.
As always, if you have any questions about senior care or your parent’s overall health, talk to a doctor that is knowledgeable of the situation so that they can point you in the right direction.
Advanced Medical Needs
Some people have medical needs that require more than what can be provided for by an in-home caregiver. This is why nursing homes came about. They are cheaper than a hospital, and fulfill a lot of the basic needs that are often required at a hospital, but at a smaller price. Even with that, a nursing home is a lot more expensive than in-home care. Usually, a nursing home is more than double the price per year. For some people, it is the best way to stay healthy, though. It all depends on your family’s unique situation.
Can nursing home style care be administered in an in-home care setting? Yes, it can. But this requires a different kind of caregiver than what you might think. You will need a trained and licensed nurse. Unfortunately, most in-home care services are not equipped with this kind of staff, and the cost of this care is higher. Depending on what your loved one’s care needs are, it is sometimes possible to find this, though.
Insurance Issues
Right now, insurance is one of the biggest deciding factors when it comes to the type of care that your loved one will receive. And unfortunately, most insurance policies do not include in-home care by a non-medical caregiver in their areas of coverage. A lot of elderly individuals find themselves receiving care in a nursing home setting because this is the only type of care that their health coverage will fully offset.
It shouldn’t be like that, but this is the reality of senior care right now. We understand that not everyone has the means to secure the best senior care. Until this changes, this is another reason why in-home care might not be best for your family.
Personal Desires
If your mom or dad would rather be at an assisted living facility than receive in-home care, that is perfectly acceptable. Many people prefer to stay in their own homes, but others like the social atmosphere that an assisted living facility creates. This is why it’s important that you talk to your loved one early so that you know what kind of care they prefer when senior care becomes necessary. You don’t want them in a place where they are unhappy, and knowing their desires ahead of time can ensure this.
