Finding the right care service for an older loved one can feel like an overwhelming task. There are so many choices out there; how do you know what the right one is for your older family members?
Engagement is one of the best ways to help seniors thrive. There are a lot of ways to do this. There’s physical engagement through exercise, crafts, or anything in between. Social engagement occurs through talking and being around other people. Emotional engagement often takes care of itself when someone is around people that they love, doing things that they enjoy, but this can also be an area of focus. And spiritual engagement is met through religious services, singing, prayer, and conversation. As you might have guessed, there’s a lot of overlap in all of these
Each person thrives in their own way. Finding a way to help those that you love continue to do so while they receive care isn’t impossible, although it will likely take some work to achieve.
That’s okay. You have a lot of resources on your side. The difficult part is knowing where to find them. Every community is a little different, but one of the best places to start is with what you know.
First and foremost, you know your family and those that are close to you. How can your family’s current situation help an older loved one to stay engaged in the way that they need to? Are there things around the house that can be changed or improved to make engagement easier, such as the installment of a wheelchair ramp or the changed location of a bedroom? These are big scale changes, but if they can help your loved one right where they are, then it could be worthwhile.
If you’re going to utilize outside resources, like a senior care service, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with this. Many times, needs are too severe for a family to address on their own. In this case, professional help is the good and responsible choice.
When selecting a care service, look at what their philosophy (and practice) is when it comes to engagement. If you’re trying to help a loved one stay active while they get the help that they need, this should be one of the questions that you ask when looking at different care services. If they don’t bring it up, you have the right to do so yourself. Asking questions is a good way to help your family get exactly what they need.
Don’t forget that we can be a resource for you, too. Please don’t hesitate to call or email us with any questions or concerns regarding care. We even offer free consultations to help ensure that you’re headed in the right direction.
Helping the people that we love to thrive during their senior years shouldn’t be a chore. Sometimes, all that it takes to make this happen is a partnership with the right team. Hopefully, this short blog can help you to take that next step and make it happen.
