When it comes to the lives of senior citizens, there are a handful of organizations out there working to make life better. Some of them are easily recognizable in the fight for senior rights. The AARP is one of those. As the largest lobbyist group in the United States, AARP is perhaps the most outspoken group out there representing the livelihood, health, and advocating for seniors all over the U.S. However, there are a lot of other groups out there, working at a smaller level, helping seniors to have the life that they want to have. These groups not only deserve our recognition, but should be highlighted in case Paradise In-Home Care blog readers haven’t heard of them, and could possibly benefit from their services. Here are some of the lesser known senior advocacy groups that you might find of interest.
The Institute of Medicine
The Institute of Medicine is a part of the National Academy of the Sciences. They’re a nonprofit organization, and act in an advisory role to both governmental organizations like Medicaid and Medicare, as well as several for-profit groups. The IoM plays an instrumental role in decisions that impact insurance policies for senior citizens, and they also play a role in the standards and supervision of nursing homes and other facilities across the country. If you have questions about care standards, their website can act as a great resource for you and your family.
The Administration on Aging
The AoA is one of the most important resources out there–both for seniors and their caregivers. Their main purpose is to ensure that seniors get the resources that they need to stay healthy and happy. Their reach extends to many different groups and communities. For example, they work closely with the Office of Nutrition and Health to make sure that senior citizens receive proper nutrition. They do a lot of work with HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention, work with minority groups such as Native Americans, and they have a focus on education. If you are a family caregiver, they can be a good resource for helping to ensure that your parent gets adequate attention.
National Aging in Place Council
This organization acts as advocates for seniors receiving in-home care, both medical and non-medical in nature. As an in-home care service, Paradise In-Home Care is a believer in the benefits that aging in place provides, and this non-profit group has a similar goal in this respect. In-home care is just a part of their mission, though. They also advocate for adult day cares, community involvement and reach out campaigns, and act as lobbyists for policies that promote aging in place. If you have questions about the benefits of aging in place, their website might act as a good starting point for your own research.
Local Organizations
The groups listed above are national in their reach. Your community might have local groups that help seniors out. It’s worth spending some time looking around or calling your local department of senior services to see if there are other groups that may be of help to your family.
