When it comes to protecting its senior citizens, the State of Georgia recently took a big step forward. A new policy brings transparency to what goes on at nursing homes in this state, something that was not possible in years past. The goal is to keep seniors safer and create an environment of collaboration in senior care, rather than the one of secrecy that had existed. Even if this was not done purposefully, it created the potential for increased neglect, mistreatment, and abuse. Unfortunately, this is something that happens all too frequently. Georgia took a big leap toward helping to reduce the frequency and severity of this issue.
Nursing homes in the state are now required to publicly release information on inspections and any sort of complaints and investigations that have been filed against the homes. By increasing accountability within the senior care industry, the lives of thousands of people will be improved. Even if there is no noticeable improvement in someone’s life, the extra safeguards that will be implemented will ensure that things stay beneficial to them. It’s a big step with big implications. And the winners? Our families.
Ideally, we all play a major role in keeping the senior citizens around us safe. Whether it’s a parent or grandparent, neighbor, or a friend, there are little things that we can do here and there to make sure that they are getting the care and attention that they need. Sometimes, a bigger role will be needed, such as the one that a family caregiver plays. But even if you never need to put yourself in these shoes, it doesn’t mean that there’s nothing that can be done to help out. Spend a couple minutes saying hi and asking about their day. Invite them over for dinner or a movie once in a while. Take an interest in their life. These little things matter, and they can help you to make the lives of those around you better.
Because that’s what senior care is all about–making the lives of the elderly around us a little better. Even if you don’t act as a family caregiver or work in the senior care industry, you can do this. And because the folks here at Paradise In-Home Care do work in the senior care business, there’s even more that we can do. Whether it’s providing supervision while a younger family member is at work, helping to manage medication, helping with transportation to and from medical appointments, or just being there as a friend, in-home care can go a long way toward helping people live better lives.
