Flavonoids have a reputation for helping to improve our immune systems. They are even known to help fight against some types of cancer. They are found in a wide variety of substances, most notably chocolate, red wine, celery, berries, red pepper, and chamomile. Citrus fruit peels also are known to have flavonoids in them.
Current research suggests that there may be other benefits to ingesting flavonoids, too. When it comes to Parkinson’s disease, flavonoids might have a positive impact on reducing the risk of death on those that have the disease.
This research was conducted by a team from Penn State and was recently published in the medical journal, Neurology. They hope that this research can help lead to better treatment and quality of life for those that suffer from Parkinson’s. Hopefully, it will also lead to a better understanding of the disease and how those who have it are impacted by it.
This is certainly not a carte blanche to drink as much wine as you want. Wine is not the only food or drink that contains flavonoids, and researchers are always careful to note that wine should be consumed with moderation. Furthermore, red wine is not ideal for everyone, especially those that have medical conditions that may cause complications or those that have a history of alcoholism or take medications that can interact negatively with alcohol. It’s always best to speak with a medical professional if you have questions about alcohol, Parkinson’s, or anything concerning these subjects. A doctor will be able to give you much more accurate information. This blog post is just meant to help present information that researchers have uncovered.
Regardless, it is clear that Parkinson’s disease research is taking some big steps forward. This doesn’t mean that we now have a cure for the disease, but we do have a better understanding of it and how it works, especially compared to where we were ten or twenty years ago. As research continues to advance, we are continuing to be able to provide a better quality of life for people suffering from this disease, especially when the disease is detected early and treated effectively.
A quality care team is part of this equation. Having individuals on your side that know and understand the complications that come along with Parkinson’s disease–or whatever other health issues you might be facing–is important. This is true both for your medical treatment team and for those that provide senior care. It might seem like a challenge at first, but it doesn’t need to be.
