According to a recent survey, fewer than one in five adults with Type 2 diabetes is currently meeting the recommended guidelines when it comes to maintaining optimal levels of heart health. And while it’s true that diabetes leads to a lot of other health complications, because these guidelines are not being met, individuals in this position are potentially exposing themselves to a whole lot of extra health issues that they might not need to face otherwise.
Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body is unable to naturally regulate sugar levels within the body. Normally, the body uses sugar as energy to function. With Type 2 diabetes, this does not happen. It is caused by an excess of sugar circulating in the body for extended periods of time. This can be caused by diet, poor exercise habits, and obesity. Although this isn’t a universal rule, about 95 percent of all Type 2 diabetes cases are caused by this.
Type 2 diabetes as a comorbidity can certainly complicate other health issues, and heart disease is one of these things. But just because this complication exists doesn’t mean that it needs to. Barriers to health care, especially for those that have difficulty leaving the house (such as a disabled senior) or poverty have been rapidly disappearing, especially since the pandemic showed most of the world that in-person medical care is not the only way to address care. Virtual care and greater access to health insurance has reduced a lot of these barriers, yet many adults with Type 2 diabetes are still not getting the medical attention that they need to effectively reduce the likelihood of complications.
This observation comes after a team of researchers from the Ohio State University College of Medicine in Columbus published a study in the medical journal, Circulation. Hopefully, studies like this one can help get people with health issues connected with better care so that their quality of life is not negatively impacted without cause.
Diabetes and cardiovascular disease are both complicated issues that can have a severe negative impact on someone’s quality of life. And like many other health issues, their negative impact on health can be compounded when they are present together. Treating comorbidities is never a simple process, but with the right team of doctors and a proactive attitude, you can take steps to help provide yourself and your family with the best outcomes possible.
We’d love to be a part of that team. Having the right service on your side can make things better, even if it isn’t providing a direct medical service to you. Access to transportation, reminders about appointments and medications, and being present can make a world of difference in someone’s life, especially if they are already suffering from a health issue. In-home care isn’t designed to cure health problems, but rather put another support in place to help that individual live the best life that they can all while staying in their own home.
There’s a lot that in-home care can do for your loved ones. If you’d like to learn more, please feel free to get in touch.
