Huntington’s disease is a brain disease, progressive in nature. It usually will start manifesting in visible symptoms between the ages of 30 and 50, but sometimes it happens younger or older. Once symptoms begin, they continue to get worse and worse over the person suffering from the disease’s lifetime. As a result of this, older folk tend to have much more severe symptoms than younger individuals do.
Huntington’s disease is also genetic. If it is inherited from a parent, the person who inherits it will eventually develop the disease as well. Knowing your family history can help you to stay ahead of symptoms and treatment. Even though there’s no cure for the disease, there are things that can be done to help manage the symptoms and improve the quality of life for those that have the disease. A strong, professional care team can help here.
It’s characterized by uncontrollable movements, similar to Parkinson’s. It also brings about issues with memory, concentration, and judgment, in a manner similar to Alzheimer’s. And like both, it is a degenerative disease, progressing until the person with it ultimately passes away.
Symptoms similar to obsessive-compulsive disorder can also be present with Huntington’s.
Huntington’s disease is just one of the many afflictions that someone might have when they enter into care. This is why it’s important that caregivers have a wide background when it comes to the training that they receive. Memory care, working with those with disabilities, diet restrictions, and more are all important components of a caregiver’s training. This is why we provide ongoing and intensive training for all of our employees. We also allow staff to develop specific speciality skills, such as memory care for those working with individuals with dementia. We believe that this is one of the things that sets us apart from other care services. Our staff are some of the most highly trained out there.
