Research from the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center has been geared toward helping those with Alzheimer’s disease live a higher quality of life. A new treatment recently explored here looks like it has the ability to potentially slow down memory loss in those that are suffering from this form of dementia.
The new treatment is delivered nasally and works by delivering pro-resolving lipid mediators into the body. The research team found that in Alzheimer’s models, this led to a cessation of memory loss.
To be clear, this is certainly not a cure for Alzheimer’s disease. There is still no cure for the most common form of dementia. However, if the research holds up and the treatment proves to be as helpful for people as initial trials indicate, this could be a very big step forward when it comes to improving the quality of life that those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease experience. One of the hallmark symptoms of Alzheimer’s is memory loss, and helping to stop or even slow this decline down could go a long way toward helping people with Alzheimer’s live a better life for a longer period of time.
The team from LSU recently published their findings in the journal, Communications Biology. This initial research was conducted on mouse models, so there’s still a long way to go before it’s discovered whether or not this is a feasible method for treating humans safely and effectively. This was just one of many steps needed before this becomes a viable option. Hopefully, research continues to show positive results. The people that we love that have Alzheimer’s don’t deserve what they are going through. A path of relief, even something that is not conclusive or permanent such as this one, is always welcome.
