New research into the popular medication semaglutide holds some encouraging results for seniors and others at risk of dementia. It might reduce the risk that someone has of developing Alzheimer’s disease.
This research was targeted specifically toward those individuals that are suffering from type 2 diabetes. The researchers found that semaglutide was more effective at lowering the risk of Alzheimer’s than some of the other type 2 diabetes medications that are out there right now.
The team used about three years of data into type 2 diabetes to conduct their research. About a million patients’ records were used during this project. They found that their results were consistent regardless of obesity status, gender, and age.
Semaglutide is the active ingredient in medications like Ozempic and Wegovy. It has seen a high rise in popularity over the last couple years when used for weight loss, but it is also well known as a diabetes medication.
This research comes from Case Western Reserve University. The team published their findings in the journal, Alzheimer’s & Dementia: The Journal of the American Alzheimer’s Association. There’s a lot more research that needs to be done when it comes to dementia and the improvement of the quality of life that those that are impacted by this experience. However, projects like this are important because it moves us all one step closer to helping the people that are diagnosed with this. Hopefully, this is research that can help people live better lives.
According to the Alzheimer’s Association, about seven million people in the U.S. suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. There is no cure for this type of dementia, although research indicates that there are things that can be done to help reduce the risk of developing the disease. These things include diet and exercise. Certain medications might be able to help, too. Semaglutide could potentially be amongst these now, as well.
Memory care is an important part of senior care. When a loved one has Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia, it can seem pretty hopeless at times. And while there’s no cure for many types of dementia, that doesn’t mean that nothing can be done. When someone has dementia, finding them the right team can go a long way toward improving the quality of life that they experience. The right senior care service is an important component of this.
