According to a recent estimate, dementia might be far more prevalent than what we originally thought. This survey indicated that one in ten people over the age of 65 might be impacted by some form of dementia.
Additionally, these same estimates say that two in ten people over the age of 65 are suffering from mild cognitive impairment, which has many of the same symptoms of dementia, but typically with less severity.
If these estimates are correct, it means that there are tens of thousands of seniors out there that are struggling, many of which don’t have a solid connection to senior care or assistance like they probably need.
This study came out of the University of Michigan. Senior care in general has received a lot more attention since the pandemic began, but hopefully this study highlights the memory care sector within the bigger care industry. A lot more attention needs to be given across the country to those suffering from dementia or cognitive impairment.
Not all of these individuals suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s is one of the most common types of dementia, and one of the most severe. There’s no cure for the disease and it is a degenerative disease. The symptoms that an individual faces continuously grow worse throughout the span of the disease until the person suffering from it eventually passes away. Despite this severity, researchers are constantly making progress with their understanding of the disease and finding new ways to help slow its spread.
Finding the right memory care for a loved one can be tricky. Senior care isn’t one size fits all. Each individual has their own specific set of needs and goals when it comes to care, but those with dementia have a very unique profile that needs to be met. The caregiver needs to have specialized training and understanding that not everyone has. Memory care is different from general senior care so you will want your caregiver to have this training.
If you’re unsure if the service that you’re looking at has a background in memory care, ask. It’s important to have these conversations with a prospective caregiver. There’s a lot of trust involved here. These kinds of conversations are essential to a good working relationship.
