One of the concerns when the COVID-19 pandemic first began was that no one knew what the long term repercussions of the disease would be. As time separates us from the start of the pandemic over two years ago now, we are starting to see what some of these long term effects might be.
According to new research from Case Western Reserve University, there is a link between having been infected with the COVID-19 virus and the future development of Alzheimer’s disease.
This study looked at more than six million people aged 65 and older, dating back to the beginning of the COVID pandemic. The likelihood of someone getting Alzheimer’s that did not have COVID during this time was 0.35 percent, while the likelihood of someone getting Alzheimer’s that did have COVID was about 0.68 percent. This may not seem like a huge increase, but it is close to doubling the chances. For such a serious illness, avoiding having COVID through preventive actions becomes a lot more important.
The team published their findings in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.
Alzheimer’s is a very serious neurological condition, and there’s no cure for it. As research advances we are beginning to understand more and more about the disease, though. Cognitive decline, loss of bodily control and functions, and ultimately death are parts of Alzheimer’s, but if the disease is detected early enough, sometimes there are treatments and activities that can help to slow down the spread of the disease.
In-home care can sometimes play an essential part in someone’s life when they have Alzheimer’s, or any other type of dementia. Studies show that someone with Alzheimer’s is often likely to see slower decline if they reside in a place where they have spent a lot of time prior to the disease. The home is usually the most familiar place for someone. Moving someone into a nursing home when they have Alzheimer’s can actually have the opposite impact on someone. Unfortunately, the nursing home tends to be the first line of defense for some people when they realize that extra help with care is needed.
That’s where we can step in and help. We provide in-home care, which allows people to receive help right where they are. There’s no need to relocate because care comes to you.
But it’s important to remember that each situation is a little bit different. While in-home care might be ideal in some situations, it’s not perfect for everyone. Each person is a little bit different and in-home care won’t be perfect for everyone. If that’s the case, we can help with that, too. We’d love to sit down and talk and get to know your family’s needs a little bit more during a free consultation. We can help get you pointed in the right direction, even if it’s not with us. Our goal is to give those that we work with the best care experience possible.
We’d be happy to talk more. Give us a call today to get started.
